Many people who are new to the world of professional retouching ask themselves: why are so many “before/after” examples made from the same free images, and not from real orders? The answer lies not only in legal restrictions, but also in the ethics of the profession.
1. Confidentiality of commercial projects
Most commercial shoots are the result of a team effort: photographer, client, models, makeup artists and other specialists. Their consent to use the images is strictly regulated by the contract. Even if the retoucher made a significant contribution to the shot, he does not have the right to publish the work in a “before/after” format, where the original is visible.
Showing the “before” can reveal flaws that the client does not want to advertise. This is especially true for brands and celebrities, whose reputation is directly related to the image. 2. Ethical aspect and respect for models
Even if the model agreed to a photo shoot, this does not mean that she wants to see her face in a “before/after” series, where the emphasis is on skin imperfections, body shape or other nuances. Demonstrating such examples without respect for the person in the photo is a violation of professional ethics.
3. Free RAW files - a safe platform for demonstrating skills
There are platforms that provide RAW files for practicing and demonstrating skills. These images are specially created for learning and creativity, and their authors agreed to public editing and publication of the results.
This gives retouchers creative freedom: they can radically change the image without looking back at technical specifications, client and brand guidelines. An ideal environment for demonstrating skills, and not strictly following the client's instructions. 4. Commercial retouching does not always impress "before/after"
Sometimes the retoucher's task is to make minimal, almost imperceptible edits: correct skin color, remove one speck of dust, make subtle color correction. This can be done perfectly, but it will not give a "wow" effect in the comparison format. But working on a demo RAW file can be more expressive, because there are no restrictions.
Bottom line: demonstrating on a free RAW is not a "fake" or a scam. It is a proven practice that allows you to honestly and professionally present your skills, without violating confidentiality and respecting the work of the entire team.
Commercial work is a portfolio.
Free RAW files are a showcase of skill.
